Therefore, it is best to consume potatoes with the skin on instead of peeled potatoes since the skin contains several vitamins and minerals. One lesser-known fact is that you can consume potatoes for kidney stones. Potatoes can aid in preventing and dissolving kidney stones. Kidney stones, which can range from small to large, are common due to unhealthy diets. Potato peels, in particular, contain vitamins and minerals that can help prevent or dissolve these stones. Here’s how potatoes can help prevent kidney stones:

1. Rich in potassium

Potatoes are high in potassium, making them the perfect solution for increasing your consumption to balance the calcium in your urine as a preventative measure against calcium-based kidney stones. You could try to consume more baked or boiled potatoes in your meals to boost potassium levels.

 

2. Opt for low-oxalate potatoes

Oxalates are one of the most significant causes of kidney stones because oxalate and calcium bind together in the intestine and when there is not enough calcium, then the extra oxalate has nothing in the intestine to bind to, so it gets absorbed into the bloodstream and ends up in the urine, where it forms a calcium oxalate stone. However, like most carb foods, potatoes rank low in oxalates, which might help those prone to kidney stones.

3.   Pair potatoes with hydration.

It is also very important to ensure that you take plenty of fluids since it is one of the most common measures for preventing the formation of kidney stones. Some vegetables, like potatoes, when prepared by boiling contain relatively high proportions of water. It is advisable to wash down your potato dishes with water, as this will help to dilute your urine and therefore minimize the concentration of stone-forming minerals.

4. Avoid high-sodium potato dishes.
